CLASSIFICATION OF VIRUS

Viruses classified based on various factors viz., Host, disease in human, target tissues, mode of transmission, vector, Structure and Nucleic acids. • Viral genome’s nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), strandedness (single-stranded or double-stranded), Sense, and method of replication determine its class. • Other classifications are determined by the disease caused by the virus or its morphology. • Viruses can be placed in one of the seven groups. Classification Based on Structure of Virus • Structurally Virus are  1. Helical Symmetry: ▶ The protein and nucleic acid are arranged in a spiral. ▶ Examples: Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), Rabies, Influenza. ▶ Most helical viruses are enveloped and RNA viruses. 2. Icosahedral Symmetry: ▶ The protein subunits form a symmetrical shell around the nucleic acid core. ▶ An icosahedron has 12 vertices, 20 faces, and 30 edges. ▶ Examples: Poliovirus, Adenovirus, Hepatitis virus. ▶ Icosahedral capsids are stable...

  1.      HEPATITIS A VIRUS ·        HAV causes infectious hepatitis ·        Spread by the fecal-oral route . ·        Result from consumption of contaminated water, shellfish, or other food. ·        Picornavirus - a new genus Hepa rna virus ·        Long incubation period - 15 to 40 days . Mode of Transmission ·        Sure, here are the rephrased sentences: ·        Contaminated water, food, and unclean hands are common means of virus transmission. ·        The virus is excreted in significant quantities through feces and is primarily disseminated through the fecal-oral route. ·        Shellfish, particularly clams, oysters, and mussels, serve as significant sources of t...

Chicken Pox - Varicella Zoster Virus

VARICELLA-ZOSTER VIRUS ·        VZV causes chickenpox (varicella) upon recurrence, and causes herpes zoster, or shingles . ·        As an alphaherpesvirus, VZV shares many characteristics with HSV. ·        Causes Clinical chicken pox (primary infection). ·        90% of cases before age 10, peak incidence 2-8 years. ·        Recurrent infection - shingles (herpes zoster) in adults. ·        VZV is seen worldwide and is highly infectious, ·        Human is the only natural host of the virus. 1. Virus transmission and Structure ·        Virus entry through inhalation – airborne transmission. ·        Direct contact. ·        Vesicle fluids. ·        Viral ...
